Where you lay your head July 18, 2007

Well, it seems we’ve solved a part of the sleep problem.. sort of. So, our son hasn’t been sleeping very well. But, last night, during the thunderstorm, after being woken up by some thunderclaps, we didn’t want him to be scared for any longer than he had to be. I mean, as an adult, I don’t like being woken up by thunder. I can’t imagine how scary it is for an infant.
The solution was to move him to our bed. This wasn’t something we were particularly interested because we really don’t want to have to break this habit down the road. But, it really seemd to do the trick. It’s some of the best sleep he’s probably gotten since we got him home. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the best sleep we’ve ever gotten. You see, our son rolls around and kicks and moves a lot. It’s not the most comfortable… at one point, I remember him laying sideways with his head in front of me and his feet in front of my wife’s face. In fact, I thought he actually kicked her in the face. According to her, he didn’t.
We tried his naps in the bed today and both of them went quite well. However, we tried to move back to the crib for bedtime. It didn’t seem to go very well. I’m not entirely sure what it is, but we’re willing to go with it for a little while. The truth is, even if we’re not getting much more sleep, we are still getting more. Plus, sometimes, we don’t even have to get out of bed to calm him down if he wakes up at night.
I’m happy that my son slept at very normal times during his nap times today. I’m thinking that this sleeping in our bed thing is really helping him regulate his sleep. Hopefully he won’t get in too attached to the idea. I’m really happy that we’re finding something that’s working and he’s not being sleep deprived.
